What is an Immortal Jellyfish (Immortal jellyfish)?
This biological wonder is Turritopsis Dohrnii. This small species of hydrozoan, which is native to the Mediterranean Sea and can grow no bigger than 4.5 millimeters, or the same size as a pinky fingernail, has been spreading globally by hitchhiking on ship ballast waters. The jellyfish looks similar to other multicellular organisms, but it has a unique life cycle that sets apart virtually all others.
What is it? How does it work?
The ability of an adult turritopsis dhrnii to return to a more immature, younger state is exhibited when the jellyfish experiences stress or injury. This process is called transdifferentiation.
The jellyfish does not die, but instead resorbs all of its tentacles and shrinks to a small blob. It then turns back into Polyp, its first developmental stage. This polyp can be used to produce new jellyfish that are genetically identical, restarting the life cycle. This is similar to an adult butterfly turning into a caterpillar or an older human being transformed back into an egg. The cycle could theoretically continue indefinitely and grant the species biological immortality.
Not truly invulnerable but biologically immortal
The word “immortal”, however, does not mean that the creature is invulnerable. Turritopsis Dohrnii is still vulnerable to predators and disease. The immortality of this species is due to the fact that it can avoid dying from aging. Its unique feature has been the subject of intensive scientific research, providing potential insights into cell regeneration, aging, and cancer research.
